Columbian coffee:
A new study done by the New England Journal of Medicine has shown that a daily cup of coffee may lower the risk of dying from chronic diseases. This study is the largest of its kind ever done, and followed more than 400,000 healthy men and women for a period of up to 13 years. The study showed that overall, coffee drinkers were less likely than their peers to die during the study, and the more coffee they consumed, the lower the mortality risks tended to be. When compared with people who drank no coffee at all, men and women who drank coffee daily were 10% and 15% less likely to die during the study. Although seemingly small, these percentages could have potentially dramatic implications for public health if consumed by 83% of the adult population that drink coffee daily in the United States. This pattern held consistently when data was taken on specific causes of death, including heart disease, lung disease, pneumonia, stroke, diabetes, infections, and even injuries and accidents. These statistics are accredited to coffee’s nearly 1000 compounds, many of which are health-promoting antioxidants.


Fo-Ti, also known as “he-shou-wu” – Chinese Cornbind, Chinese Knotweed, and Flowery Knotweed – has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 3,000 years. According to legend, the man who first discovered Fo-Ti was delighted to find that with regular use, it revived his natural dark hair color, and sexual fertility. Since its discovery more than 3,000 years ago, Fo-Ti has been regarded as a “youthful tonic” or “elixir of life.”

Fo-Ti contains a number of compounds, which include stilbene glucosides, anthraquinonoid glucosides, and anthraquinonoid derivatives such as physcion, emodin, and questin. These compounds have several properties, including the ability to lower triglyceride levels, and also act as a strong antioxidant. Studies in rodents have also indicated that Fo-Ti can also enhance memory.  Polygonum multiflorum, which is listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, is one of the most popular perennial Chinese medicines. In China and East Asia, it is known as He Shou. And in North America, it is known as Fo-Ti. Mounting pharmacological studies have stressed that Fo-Ti is extremely beneficial for the treatment of various diseases and medical conditions such as liver injury, cancer, diabetes, alopecia, atherosclerosis, and neurodegenerative diseases.

The extract of the root of Fo-Ti also exhibits significant antioxidant activity. The bioassay-guided fractionation of the extract yields a stilbene glucoside, which is the active constituent responsible for the antioxidant properties. Superoxide dismutase, generally referred to as S.O.D., is a class of closely related enzymes produced within the human body. Of all antioxidants produced in the human body, S.O.D. is the most beneficial. S.O.D. proteins are present in almost all aerobic cells, and in almost all extracellular fluids. S.O.D. transforms the superoxide radical into ions that are less reactive. These less-reactive ions are then further transformed by the antioxidants catalase and glutathione into safe molecules. This transformation, called dismutation, is essential to life. Fo-Ti supports this dismutation process.
